As the prophet of the Lord, Elijah participated in a miracle of God by defeating the 400 prophets of Baal. God had commissioned him to a difficult task. He had to confront the wickedness of a king and the lack of faithfulness of the people. Even though God was victorious through him, Elijah was only human. When he learned that Queen Jezebel vowed to kill him, he became afraid and ran for his life.
The story of how Elijah met God on Mount Horeb and was re-kindled in his calling to serve as a prophet creates an expectation in us that we, too, may experience God in new and future-giving ways. We, too, may learn anew about the inescapable grace of God that finds us, feeds us, and commissions us to serve.
